LANDBANK unites with BFAR, SEAFDEC to boost aquaculture industry
The Land Bank of the Philippines together with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) and the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC) recently established an agreement to boost aquaculture production in the country through training and transfer of newly developed technologies.
The partnership aims to expand the implementation of the Joint Mission for Accelerated Nationwide Technology Transfer Program (JMANTTP) which was initiated by BFAR and SEAFDEC in 2000.
Dubbed as the "Partnership for Promotion of JMANTTP Technologies", the program was designed to promote economically viable, environment-friendly and socially equitable aquaculture technologies to boost the production of fisherfolk nationwide.
LANDBANK President and CEO Gary Teves said that there is a need to give emphasis on the fisheries sector which LANDBANK considers as one of those with potential for growth in agriculture. "I'm hopeful that within the year and the next two years, the fisheries sector will feel the support of LANDBANK through this joint ventures with BFAR and SEAFDEC," he added.
aquaculture technologies developed by BFAR through its Western Visayas Technology Promotion Center. The Bank will also co-sponsor aquaculture technology transfer activities in key areas such as Masao, Agusan del Norte; Himamaylan, Negros Occidental; Calape, Bohol; Placer, Surigao del Norte; Lala, Lanao del Norte; Puerto Princesa, Palawan; Dagupan City, Pangasinan; and Taal, Batangas.
LANDBANK-assisted, newly accessing and potential fisherfolk co-ops as well as small and medium entrepreneurs will benefit from the program.
LANDBANK is presently partnered with eight state universities and colleges nationwide that serve as the Bank's technology promotion centers (TPCs) which provide training and technology transfer activities to members of cooperatives.
These TPCs have been promoting 30 validated technologies and have subsequently generated some P20.7 million in loans for technology adoption.
